Accountant – Vend

Accountant – Vend

Antonio Caliari-Pearce

Antonio is part of the high performing team at Vend – a POS solutions company that puts the onus on creating software that retailers love to use.

In his role as the Accountant he takes the high level business plan and translates it into operational steps for department heads. This involves converting big numbers into unit economics, tracking expenses against the business’s overriding strategy and managing the international expansion plan whilst keeping track of how Vend is progressing in each market.

Vend’s flat structure means that Antonio and the rest of the finance team report to the CFO. A typical day will also see him interacting with various department heads around how their department is adding value and what they can do to drive even more growth in the organisation.

Antonio’s path into Accounting wasn’t direct but from the get go he has “said yes to opportunity” and excelled. Antonio started out his career at just thirteen as a part timer at McDonald’s. He went on to become the brands youngest Shift Manager at fifteen. He maintained a 20 hour work week right through his schooling where he was named Head Boy and Student Body President.

Having gone on to graduate from Auckland University with First Class Honours in Human Resources he gained work with Skycity within their Employment Relationship team. Setting his mind on a new challenge Antonio shifted paths and became a Chartered Accountant. He has since been recognised as one of Australasia’s top Young Accountants.

One of Antonio’s proudest achievements to date was being elected to the Board of Charity The Discovery Foundation. His appointment made him one of the youngest Treasurers of a charity in New Zealand and allowed him to use his professional skills to pay it forward.

For Antonio working at Vend is a joy – he looks forward to the work week, engaging with his colleagues and thriving under the business’s work hard/play hard mentality.

He’s also appreciative of the industry that initially gave him his first break. In his own words: “Retail is a brilliant grounding for any career, it teaches you to keep your customer happy in a fast-paced and high stress environment. The skills I learnt in retail have translated into the corporate world and without doubt contributed to my success”
